The British Council was founded to create ‘a friendly knowledge and understanding’ between the people of the UK and the wider world. We do this by making a positive contribution to the overseas countries we work with through the teaching of English, the sharing of arts and culture, the development of educational collaborations and opportunities, and the sharing of the UK’s values and ways of living. Find out more about some of the opportunities we provided last year for UK organisations by clicking on the map.
In 2014-15 the British Council worked with over 8940 UK organisations and professionals on 239 initiatives, involving a total of 139 different countries.
We work in Education and Society, the Arts and English Language. We help equip young people in the UK for life in a global society and work in a global economy. We help position the UK as an enabler for countries, communities and individuals to access quality education, life changing experiences and greater opportunities.
We collected data across all programmes in Education and Society, the Arts and English Language that are managed in the UK, and a sample of the overseas offices.
